Once humble Oregon outfit ‘Blue Ribbon Sports’, track athlete Phil Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman started out shifting track shoes for Onitsuka Tiger in 1964. Rebranding to the name we’re all familiar with today in 1971, Nike shot to dizzy heights with the help of Bowerman’s wife’s waffle iron, which laid the foundations for a spike-less track shoe that could provide the same level of grip as its spike-consisting counterparts.
