Born from a desire to make the best running trainers for their athletes, runner Phil Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman established Nike in 1971, taking its name from the Greek goddess of victory. The endorsement of notoriously fiery competitors such as John McEnroe and Michael Jordan expanded the brand’s appeal to become one of the largest names in footwear and sports.
